The Dolphin Trail
|
|
Hike the Tsitsikamma Coast in luxury – through 20 km of pristine coastal marine wilderness area.
For those hikers who know the rigours of the Otter Trail, and for those who have never had the luck or the courage to hike it, the Dolphin Trail has the answer! Allow yourself 4 days to enjoy the magic of this beautiful are, spending 3 nights in comfort at different venues and hiking for two days with only a day pack.
The trail starts in the unrivalled beauty of the Tsitsikamma National Park at Storms River Mouth, where guests spend their first night in the quaint Dolphin Trail cabins. Hikers set off the following morning on the start of their two day hike with a trained guide. The group hikes eastwards towards Misty Mountain Reserve, crossing Storms River Mouth on the suspension bridge. En route they visit an ancient Khoisan cave, enjoy a boat trip up the Storms River (weather and boat permitting), and can snorkel or swim in one of the many rock pools along the coast. The route winds through natural fynbos and pristine indigenous forest, with two stiff climbs to the escarpment. Misty Mountain is a welcome sight at the end of the day and has luxury chalets with expansive views of the Indian Ocean, in which to recover.
On day two the trail drops immediately down to sea level where the waves crash into the tidal rock pools. From here it is possible to observe oyster catchers and other sea birds, and whales and dolphins can often be spotted beyond the rocks. The rugged coastline and beautiful fynbos, combined with the smell of the salt sea air, give hikers a unique experience of nature that they will never forget.
The third night is spent at the beautiful Fernery chalets where you have a delicious 4 course farewell dinner. After breakfast on day 4 the group is transported in a 4 x 4 vehicle down the old Storms River Pass, built by Thomas Baines along an old elephant path, back to the National Park.
The 3 night/2 day hike is an inclusive package with all meals, the attendance of a well trained guide, and transportation of luggage between venues. Set days for arrival in the Park are Sunday and Monday, from early January to mid December. Groups of six plus are welcome to negotiate their own day of departure. The maximum group size is 12 pax and the recommended minimum age 12 years.
