The Cavern

|
The Cavern has been introducing overseas and South African visitors to the joys of mountain holidays for six decades. This 3 star graded resort is nestled in the Northern Drakensberg adjacentto the Amphitheatre World Heritage Site, just over three hours from Gauteng and Durban. It is a great place to relax, meet old friends and make new ones.
This stunning resort has won numerous accolades and awards. A wide variety of superior and standard accommodation is available with spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, indigenous forests and mountains. Superior and honeymoon suites are complete with four-poster beds and fireplaces for chilly evenings. The unique Cave Bar is the ideal place to meet for a sundowner looking over the valleys below from one of the decks.
The accommodation and sports amenities are terraced around the main complex, giving the resort a commanding view of the valley and the sandstone buttresses beyond. The thatch accommodation and facilities blend beautifully with the natural surroundings of the area.
The Cavern gets its name from the Cannibal Cavern, a large cave where a local chief and his people were driven by starvation to become cannibals during Shaka’s reign. The resort is set in a secluded valley beneath the massive sandstone cliffs of the Drakensberg. It is surrounded by indigenous forest, cool valleys and mountain streams. Situated on 3000 hectares of pristine mountain landscape, the Cavern borders on the home of the Amphitheatre – a recently proclaimed World Heritage Site. The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings, 192 species of birds, 150 species of trees and numerous wild animals.
The resort offers daily hikes to such wonderful destinations as Thonsela Cave, Cannibal Cavern, Echo Cave and Sungubala amongst others. For the more energetic, walks are organised to the Tugela Falls and to the top of the Amphitheatre. The resort offers an extensive range of sports and recreational facilities, from guided walks to horse rides, jeep trips to trout fishing in five dams and mountain bike trails.
